Describe the 3 major compromises of the Constitutional Convention.
Summary
At the Constitutional Convention there were 3 major compromises made in order to solve the conflicts. One of the compromises was the Great Compromise which solved a disagreement between the large and small states. The conflict between the states was over the representation in Congress and the Great Compromise created a bi-cameral legislature that divided the Congress into the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives would be based on the population of each state and the Senate would consist of 2 representatives per state.1 Another compromise is the Three-Fifths Compromise which was between the Northern and Southern states. The Southern states wanted their slaves to be counted toward representation in the House but not toward taxes. While the Northern states thought Southern slaves should count for taxation, but not for representation. The Three-Fifths Compromise stated that three-fifths of the slave population in Southern states will count toward representation and taxes.2 The final compromise created at the Constitutional Convention solved the issue between the Federal Government and the State Governments. The Federal Government wanted more power than the state governments and wanted that power to come from the people. But the State Governments thought they should have more power and that the states should remain stronger than the Central Government. The compromise that solved this issue equally divided the power between both types of government.3
